The Grodno State Medical Institute was established in 1958, the first enrollment of freshmen amounted to 250. Over the last 50 years, the Institute (and then the university) graduated over 16,000 physicians and graduate nurses. The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus increased considerably enrollment in the University over recent years.

The Educational Institution “Grodno State Medical University” is the first medical institution of higher learning in the Republic of Belarus, where the ISO 9001 Quality Management System was introduced and certified, which complies with the National Quality Management System (СТБ ISO 9001-2009) and with the German Quality Management System (DIN EN 9001-2008).

It is worthy of note that the University trains not only physicians but also researchers and the teaching staff for its own needs. At present the administration of the University consists mainly of the University graduates. By the number of persons with doctoral and Ph.D. degrees the Grodno State Medical University takes the leading position in the Republic of Belarus.

The Republic of Belarus is a beautiful country located on the boarders between Poland and Russia, Lithuania, Latvia and the Ukraine. Belarus is a country of blue lakes, quiet nature and hospitable people. It is a land with ancient history. The first settlements appeared on the territory of modern Belarus in the 6th and 7th centuries. Over its history different parts of Belarus comprised different countries: Kievan Rus, The Great Dutchy of Lithuania, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Russian Empire, Poland, the USSR. In July 1990, the Supreme Soviet of the Republic passed the Declaration of Independence. Since then Belarus has been an independent democratic country complying with human rights and freedoms. Belarus’ unique natural environment is host to a fascinating selection of rare plant and animal species, plus several National Parks and a range of significant conservation projects.


There are 4 student hostels next to the main building of the university. They can accommodate 1840 students. Two of the buildings are of flat type i.e. with attached restroom (bathroom and toilet) and a kitchen. The hostels are centrally heated (air-conditioned). Student hostels are fully furnished. Normally two or three students share one room. There are separate arrangements for both boys and girls. At the dining room foreign students are able to prepare their national food. Foreign TV channels are available as well. The maintenance personnel keeps the students hostels clean on the daily basis and make all the students living in the hostel strictly follow the rules and regulations.

There is comfortable canteen at the University with rich variety of different dishes.
